Prescott, Ariz. (June 22, 2011) – Where to Retire, a magazine profiling top retirement destinations in the United States, released its list of “50 Best Master-Planned Communities in the U.S.” this month and Talking Rock Ranch in Prescott, Ariz. was among those recognized for being a retirement community with friendly neighbors and amenities to keep residents’ minds and bodies active.

“We are thrilled by the accolades but not surprised,” said Jim Jones, director of sales for Talking Rock. “We work hard to provide our residents with not only the best quality home products but also a community that’s rich in activity and neighborhood camaraderie. There’s always something happening at Talking Rock, from community-organized 4th of July barbecues to outdoor concerts. Our members even took it upon themselves to start an official welcoming committee for new residents. Talking Rock is really a friendly place to live.”

Research for the Where to Retire list began nearly a year ago when editors gathered information on more than 150 communities across the nation and eventually zeroed in on those that are amenity-rich with clubhouses, recreation and activities to help residents stay fully engaged. In addition to places to retire in Arizona, the selection contains communities in 16 other states.

Talking Rock was recognized for its Western spirit and design, as well as for its Ranch Compound and accompanying activities, specifically the Ranch House restaurant. Talking Rock member Laurel Bailey also was quoted in the piece. The July/August 2011 issue of Where to Retire magazine is available now on newsstands.

MACERICH JOINT VENTURE PARTNERSHIP ACQUIRES FULL OWNERSHIP OF KIERLAND COMMONS
Dominant Arizona Property Set Industry Standard for Mixed-Use Retail Development

SANTA MONICA, Calif. – Feb. 28, 2011 – Macerich® (NYSE: MAC), one of the nation’s leading owners, operators and developers of commercial real estate, and joint venture partner Institutional Mall Investors, LLC (“IMI”) today announced the acquisition of full ownership of Arizona’s Kierland Commons from its developers, Dallas-based Woodbine Development Corporation and the Herberger Interests of Phoenix/Scottsdale.

To recap the history of this transaction, in January 2005, Macerich formed a 50/50 joint venture with IMI to acquire a 49% interest in Kierland Commons from Woodbine Development Corporation and the Herberger Interests, giving Macerich and IMI each a 24.5% interest in the asset. Today’s announcement gives the joint venture full ownership in Kierland Commons, 50% to Macerich and 50% to IMI. Macerich will continue to manage and lease the retail component as it has since 2005.

In acquiring 50% ownership of the property, Macerich’s share of the purchase price included $34.2 million of cash, in addition to assuming a pro rata share of debt of $18.6 million.

Located on Arizona’s dominant Scottsdale Road corridor, Kierland Commons, which opened in 2000, is a 38-acre mixed-use retail-anchored development that produces annual small shop tenant (spaces 10,000 square feet or less) sales of $625 per square foot (as of December 31, 2010). Occupancy for the project’s 316,000 square feet of retail space is 98%.

“Macerich is recognized as having a portfolio of exceptional quality in desirable markets across the country – one of the highest quality portfolios in the industry – and Kierland Commons certainly reflects that continued focus on cultivating the very best real estate in the industry,” said Ed Coppola, president of Macerich. “We have enjoyed a strong partnership with Woodbine, and the opportunity to further invest in a property of this caliber reflects our continued focus on exceptional real estate and markets that deliver significant value.”

“Kierland Commons is widely recognized as the benchmark for retail-anchored mixed-use development, and many projects have tried to emulate its success but none have the advantages that Kierland Commons has in its location, its tenant mix, architectural design and proximity to a world-class resort,” said Buzz Gosnell, president of Woodbine Southwest. “We are very proud of this project and feel confident Macerich will continue to stay the course with our vision.”

Kierland Commons is a 600,000-square-foot Main Street development that incorporates 70 upscale retailers, 14 restaurant concepts, entertainment venues, office space and 84 luxury loft condominiums in The Plaza Lofts at Kierland Commons. The urban-inspired mixed-use destination was the recipient of the 2009 Award of Excellence from the Urban Land Institute and the 2010 winner of an Environmental Excellence Award in the category of Livable Communities/Sustainable Communities from Arizona’s Valley Forward Association.

Retailers at the property include 7 for All Mankind, Anthropologie, Barnes and Noble, BCBGMAXAZRIA, Coach, Crate and Barrel, J.Crew, Juicy Couture, Michael Kors and Victoria’s Secret. Notable restaurants include Ocean Club, Tommy Bahama Restaurant and Bar, Ra Sushi, Cheesecake Factory, North, Bar North and The Greene House. Three four- and five-star resorts are located within three miles of the property and Scottsdale Fashion Square, the state’s retail flagship and also owned by Macerich and IMI, is located approximately eight miles south.

“This competition represents a unique opportunity for the UTSA College of Architecture student body to engage with the private industry on an artistic level, as well as an opportunity for Sundt Construction to engage with a major public entity in the city of San Antonio – UTSA, said Dean Murphy. “The college greatly appreciates Sundt’s willingness to be involved.”

Sundt has helped design Texas skylines for the past 40 years. Major projects include the Warrior in Transition complex at Fort Sam Houston, the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) for the City of San Antonio, renovations at Lackland Air Force Base and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, and the Reunion Theme Tower in Dallas. Now with the establishment of the Texas regional office in San Antonio, Sundt has the opportunity to further contribute to community projects, such as the San Antonio Design Competition.

“At Sundt, we strongly believe in the value of establishing partnerships that will help reinforce our commitment to improving the communities where we live and conduct business,” said Senior Vice President and Texas District Manager John Carlson, DBIA. “Through this design competition, we hope to continue developing our relationship with UTSA and to help provide local architecture students a professional venue to showcase their talent and creativity.”
Sundt celebrated the opening of its new Texas regional office in San Antonio last year and has since been actively involved in community service projects with area schools. The employee-funded Sundt Foundation also awards grants each quarter to local non-profit organizations whose primary focus is to help children and the community.

IN 2010 THROUGH RECYCLING EFFORTS

A combination of recycling efforts and food scrap composting cuts resort’s waste by 78 percent

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (Jan. 26, 2011) – Kimpton’s FireSky Resort & Spa’s latest recycling audit revealed that the hotel recycled 142 tons of organics, plastics, paper and glass between January and December 2010. The ratio in tonnage was 142 tons of recycled material to 41 tons of waste, which means 78 percent of the resort’s refuse was diverted from landfills during the 12-month period thanks to the resort’s earth-friendly practices.

“Our staff is amazed and thrilled at how each day’s efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle make such a big difference over time,” said Jim Hollister, general manager for FireSky, Arizona’s only Green Seal Certified hotel. “We already take a lot of pride in all we do for the sake of the planet through our Green Seal initiatives and Kimpton’s EarthCare program. Being able to measure just how much of a difference we make through our recycling programs makes it even more rewarding,”

2010 was a banner year in terms of green milestones for FireSky. During 2010, the hotel went above and beyond its existing sustainable efforts born out of Kimpton’s EarthCare program, which features more than 100 eco-friendly products and operational practices, dating back to the boutique hotel company’s inception in 1981 with several industry firsts, such as in-room recycling bins and the use of non-toxic cleaners brand-wide.

In March, FireSky became the first hotel in Arizona to earn Green Seal certification at the Silver level, a process that took nearly a year. Green Seal certification is an important third-party validation of Kimpton’s EarthCare program. Through Green Seal, Kimpton is able to more effectively measure its nationwide reductions in waste, energy and water consumption at all of its 50 boutique hotels.

In July, FireSky was one of three companies honored by The Scottsdale Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. The resort received the “Greener Award” for its EarthCare initiatives and for being the first Arizona resort to earn Green Seal certification.

During the summer, FireSky was also awarded a Governor’s Tourism Award for “Best Green Tourism” during the 2010 Governor’s Conference on Tourism, held July 12 to 14 at Loews Ventana Canyon resort in Tucson, Ariz. The Governor’s Tourism Awards are given each year to honor individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the Arizona tourism industry. The awards program began in 1993, and 2010 was the first year the awards program featured a category dedicated to “Best Green Tourism.” FireSky was named the category’s inaugural winner at the July 14 luncheon because of its comprehensive EarthCare initiatives.

FireSky began its journey to become an eco-friendly hotel in 2007 when it joined the Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants family and began adopting the practices under the brand’s award-winning EarthCare program. The hotel’s employees, as well as those at Taggia Restaurant and the all-organic Jurlique Spa, were quick to embrace EarthCare initiatives – recycling paper and collecting unused soaps and gently used bedding and sheets for donation to local shelters.

Among the initiatives adopted for Green Seal certification, the hotel’s housekeeping staff integrated sorting bins on the cleaning carts, with easy-to-reach recycling and donation bins conveniently placed behind the scenes throughout the grounds. The hotel also added a compost program, which diverted upward of three tons of food from landfills in March 2010 alone. Food scraps are composted and repurposed as feed for pigs on a farm in Payson, Ariz. Hollister said the FireSky team ensures green practices with various checks and balances, educating and rewarding the staff on an ongoing basis.

Not only are all these environmentally-friendly processes important to staff, they matter to resort guests, too. According to guest surveys, Kimpton’s eco-consciousness is the reason why 18 percent of first-time guests select the brand’s hotels and restaurants. FireSky guest surveys rank the influence of green efforts even higher at upward of 20 percent.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Tips from the Golf Pros at Talking Rock Golf Club

Four Simple Steps to an Easy Draw

PRESCOTT, Ariz. (Jan. 19, 2011) – Talking Rock is home to an 18-hole, 7,350-yard championship golf course in Prescott designed by famed golf course architect Jay Morrish. Its varied terrain encompasses washes, ponds and thousands of piñon and juniper trees on 1,000 acres, giving lots of opportunity to encounter unpredictable conditions. Lucky for its members and guests, Talking Rock Golf Club’s team of Prescott golf professionals has seen it all and can help players navigate the terrain and seasonal wind that can impact even the lowest handicap. Here, Head Golf Professional David Buettner offers steps to an easy draw.

Four Easy Setup Adjustments for hitting right-to-left:

Address the golf ball as you normally would

Aim your feet and shoulders to the right of where you want the ball to start

Aim the club head at the intended target, where you would like the ball to stop

Take a normal swing

“You can start attacking a left-hole position from the fairway by aiming at the middle of the green and hitting a draw to turn it towards the flagstick,” said Buettner. “This will lead to a much higher percentage of greens in regulation.”

David Buettner has been a golfer for most of his life, including being on the team at University of Nebraska where he graduated with a degree in business administration. Prior to joining Talking Rock, David worked as manager at several Nebraska golf clubs including Austad’s Golf Stores, Iron Eagle Golf Club, North Platte Country Club and Hi-Mark Golf Club. David has been with Talking Rock since it opened and is currently going through the PGA accreditation program. Aside from his welcoming personality, David’s claim-to-fame at Talking Rock is shooting the first hole-in-one on the 15th hole.

# # #

About Talking Rock:
