ARIZONA ONCOLOGY PARTICIPATES IN FIRST RANDOMIZED PHASE 2 CLINICAL TRIAL FOR CHONDROSARCOMA PATIENTS

Monday, June 13th, 2011

PHOENIX, Ariz. (June 13, 2011) – Arizona Oncology, in cooperation with Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center Clinical Trials in Scottsdale, Ariz., is enrolling patients in a randomized, double-blind Phase 2 clinical trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of IPI-926 compared to placebo in patients with metastatic or locally advanced, inoperable chondrosarcoma.

IPI-926, an inhibitor of the Hedgehog pathway, was discovered and is being developed by Infinity Pharmaceuticals Inc., a biopharmaceutical company based in Cambridge, Mass. Research suggests the Hedgehog signaling pathway, a series of chemical reactions within a cell, may play a role in the development of different types of cancer, including chondrosarcoma.

Research at the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center at Scottsdale Healthcare is conducted through a partnership with the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) and Scottsdale Healthcare that treats cancer patients with promising new drugs through clinical trials.

The trial, which is the first of its kind to be done in chondrosarcoma, is expected to enroll more than 100 patients. Chondrosarcoma is a rare, life-threatening cancer of the cartilage. There are currently no approved chemotherapy options for this disease and, when surgery is not possible, chondrosarcoma is uniformly fatal. In nonclinical studies presented at the American Association for Cancer Research 2011 Annual Meeting, IPI-926 treatment inhibited both the Hedgehog pathway and tumor growth in mice with chondrosarcoma.

In the U.S., chondrosarcoma accounts for approximately one-third of the 2,000 cases of primary bone cancer diagnosed each year. The most common locations for chondrosarcoma tumors are the bones of the extremities and the pelvis. Symptoms associated with chondrosarcoma depend upon the size and location of the tumor and often include pain that increases in severity over time, localized swelling and decreased range of motion in joints near the affected bone.

As chondrosarcomas are largely resistant to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the standard therapeutic strategy is surgery. For patients with metastatic disease or with locally advanced tumors who are not candidates for surgery, no treatment has been shown to be effective and there is no established standard of care.

“We are encouraged by the Phase 1 trial of IPI-926. In the Phase 1 trial, IPI-926 was well tolerated and showed anti-tumor activity in patients with solid tumors,” said Mahesh Seetharam, M.D., medical oncologist, Arizona Oncology. “We are pleased to be part of this study, as well as other clinical trials that give new hope for rare cancers. Patients who participate in these trials are followed very carefully and may benefit, especially when no other treatment options are available.”

Dr. Seetharam provides comprehensive cancer care as part of the Arizona Oncology network, which treats more cancer patients than any other cancer care provider in the state of Arizona. Dr Seetharam also works closely with Virginia G. Piper Cancer Clinical Trials and has access to more than 30 Phase 1 investigational agents through the partnership between TGen and Scottsdale Healthcare.

Arizona Oncology is affiliated with US Oncology, giving patients access to brand new treatments and state-of-the-art technology. In addition, patients have access to the latest research and clinical trials through both the Arizona Oncology and US Oncology networks.

The study is being coordinated by Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center Clinical Trials in Scottsdale, Ariz., a partnership with the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) and Scottsdale Healthcare that treats cancer patients with promising new drugs through clinical trials.

Piper Cancer Center at Scottsdale Healthcare may contact the cancer care coordinator at 480-323-1339, toll free at 1-877-273-3713 or via email at clinicaltrials@shc.org or visit clinicaltrials.gov.

Limelight: FireSky Resort + Barnett’s Magazine

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

While fine Italian dining and Harley Davidson riding might not seem like an obvious combination, the folks at Barnett’s Magazine, a bike and Harley-enthusiast publication from Texas, rode into town recently and  found their picks for best eats of Arizona Bike Week. Despite what many might think, bikers like to not only eat, but eat well. The Barnett team visited some of Scottsdale’s hot spots in search of gourmet cuisine beyond the burgers and barbeque.

When it came time for some Italian fare the team visited Taggia, the restaurant at FireSky Resort & Spa in south Scottsdale. They dined on dished such as fesh seafood and wood fired pizza, both which received rave reviews. Taggia proved to provide a delicious retreat from life on the road. DLB HOMES BREAKS GROUND ON NEW-BUILD PROJECT IN PRESCOTT

Smaller Home Series at Talking Rock Ranch Focuses on Functional Space and Mindful Design

Prescott, Ariz. (June 1, 2011) – Talking Rock Ranch is working with Tru-North Architecture and DLB Custom Homes, Inc. on a new residential product that follows the shift to smaller and smarter building seen across the country. Like Talking Rock’s other smaller ranch homes in Prescott, this series will be built in a more energy-efficient manner without sacrificing the quality and amenities that residents have come to expect from the luxury private homes community in Prescott.

“We’ve seen a change in the marketplace from consumers,” said Dan Boylan, president of DLB Custom Homes, Inc. “Today’s home owners are looking to maintain design integrity without spending massive amounts of money. They are mindful of their finances and focused on living within their means. Because of this, we have honed in on producing smaller, more affordable homes that make the most out of every square-foot of space and piece of high-quality material.”

Jim and Carolyn Kaplan, from Southern California by way of Minnesota and Colorado, are the first to work with DLB on designing and building a smaller home. After visiting several communities across the Southwest, including Las Vegas and Lake Havasu City, Ariz., the Kaplans decided to retire in Prescott at Talking Rock because of its mild seasons and charming, small town feel.

“We met with Dan one morning and discovered we shared similar Midwestern roots,” said Jim Kaplan. “We got the distinct impression that he would spend our dollars as if they were his own. There was no doubt that we had found our builder and our new home. We bought our lot the next day.”

The Kaplan’s Arizona ranch-style home will measure 2,278 square feet in livable space with two bedrooms and 2.5-bathrooms, a detached garage, great room, gourmet kitchen, and dedicated dining and office space.

“We wanted to focus on more spacious, useful rooms instead of several smaller ones,” adds Kaplan.

Ranch architecture is updated with a contemporary feel and features shed roofs, metal accents, and a wood and stucco material palette. Functional living spaces are designed with a strong relationship to the outdoors, and maximize views of Williamson Valley’s canyons and mountains.

A 2010 survey conducted by the National Association of Home Builders found that nine of 10 builders said they were planning to build smaller, lower-priced homes. Talking Rock Ranch began offering smaller home products more than a year before the report was released with the debut of Homestead Five, also a product of Tru-North Architecture and DLB Custom Homes, which downsized livable square-footage to the mid- to upper 2000s but still offered the high-end finishes of larger custom homes. This line was followed by the release of Western Legends, a partnership with Mom’s Custom Homes and Everwood Design, Ltd., and the Lone Spur Collection from TRD&B Inc.

About Talking Rock Ranch:

Located in a peaceful, rural setting, just minutes from Prescott, Talking Rock is a 3,600-acre private, luxury home community with a casual western lifestyle and the amenities of an exclusive country club. The Jay Morrish-designed 7,350-yard championship golf course intertwines through more than 1,000 acres of preserved open space, presenting residents with the spaciousness of Arizona’s high country. Talking Rock offers spacious custom home sites, as well as Ranch Cottages, Ranch Homes and custom homes in Prescott designed in an authentic ranch style and built by the area’s finest craftsmen. Talking Rock is a development of Harvard Investments, a Scottsdale, Ariz. based real estate development company respected for its high quality, residential projects throughout the Southwest. The Talking Rock golf course and Ranch Compound are professionally managed by OB Sports. The Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course at Red Ledges features 18 holes, each with a stunning view of the Rocky Mountains. Jack Nicklaus, one of the globe’s preeminent designers and the man Golf Inc. Magazine has named one of the “Most Powerful People in Golf” for six straight years, designed the 7,653-yard course to incorporate and accentuate the existing landscape.

“They often say that it can be harder to repeat success than to achieve it, so Red Ledges should be proud to once again receive this recognition — and while still being less than two years old,” said Jack Nicklaus. “That is a testament not only to the golf course, but the commitment of the ownership at Red Ledges and the hard work of the entire staff.”

“We are honored to receive this recognition from Utah’s premier recognition and awards program,” said Mitchel Burns, Red Ledges COO. “Jack Nicklaus was very particular in the experience he wanted to create for Red Ledges’ members, so it is very rewarding to be recognized for the work Jack and the Red Ledges team put into the course and design.”

The Best of State awards were created to recognize excellence in our state and community. Red Ledges was the recipient of the Best of State title based on the outstanding course design by Jack Nicklaus and his phenomenal work integrating a mountain golf course with natural red sandstone landscaping. Other judging criteria included the use of innovative approaches and methods as well as a significant contribution to a better quality of life in Utah.

Red Ledges launched its Jim McLean Golf School in 2010, which includes an onsite summer facility and a winter location in Park City. Jim McLean, recognized as one of the top three golf instructors in the world, personally created a comprehensive instruction program for Red Ledges, including world-class technology and top golf instruction. Red Ledges has expanded its lifestyle offerings with the recent launch of its Cliff Drysdale Tennis School. WILLIAMSON VALLEY RESIDENTS ELECT 3 NEW REPRESENTATIVES TO INSCRIPTION CANYON RANCH SANITARY DISTRICT BOARD MEMBERS

WILLIAMSON VALLEY RESIDENTS ELECT 3 NEW REPRESENTATIVES TO INSCRIPTION CANYON RANCH SANITARY DISTRICT BOARD MEMBERS

PRESCOTT, Ariz. (May 19, 2011) – Results are in for the Inscription Canyon Ranch Sanitary District (ICRSD) board election and Scott Robbins, Robert Hilb, and Brian Ray will replace three recalled board members after the Board of Supervisors and the district acknowledge receipt of canvass, and the new Board members accept oath of office.  County procedures clearly state this must occur within 20 days of election.

“We are thrilled with the results of this recall election and believe it will help boost the local Prescott economy as we recover from the worst recession in my lifetime,” said Craig Krumwiede, president of Harvard Investments, developer of Talking Rock. “The community effort, endless hours, and hard work of the ICRSD recall committee really paid off and we are grateful to all who helped every step of the way. The results will finally allow us to begin focusing on the proper management of wastewater facilities and will stop wasteful spending.”

More than 82 percent of the area’s registered voters turned out for the election. The recall initiative made the May 17 ballot after a grassroots effort led by volunteers that began when a moratorium on sewer hookup was initiated by the current board. An April 29 ruling by the Honorable Kenton D. Jones of Yavapai County Superior Court declared the sewer hookup moratorium imposed by the ICRSD to have been wrongfully adopted, thereby making it null and void. In part, it also declared the following:

  • The ICRD Board repeatedly and knowingly violated open meeting laws in terms of providing public information and in adopting the moratorium and the court held in the order there were “blatant and intentional violations of the open meeting law”;
  • The District does not have police power to regulate sewage treatment capacity and connections

Russ Korcuska

“Russ’s extensive experience in the healthcare sector made him the ideal choice for this role,” said Marty Hedlund, senior vice president and Southwest district manager. “He has an impressive track record, and we are excited to have him on our team as we look to grow our healthcare portfolio.”
