LAST VEGAS
CBS Studios

Last Vegas stars Four Academy Award® winning legends, with a combined 6 Oscar® wins, 9 nominations, and films that have grossed nearly $16 billion in worldwide box office, together for the first time on the big screen. Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline star as lifelong friends who opt to stop acting their age and relive their glory days when the pack’s sworn bachelor decides to get married to his girlfriend (who is half his age). The destination? Las Vegas.

As the field agency for CBS Films, Olson Communications was tasked in assisting with the all-encompassing press event in Las Vegas, the city in which the film is set. Media from national and international outlets arrived in Las Vegas for three days of Last Vegas activities.

Events kicked off with a public presentation of the key to Las Vegas from County Commissioner Chair Steve Sisolak and Mayor Carolyn Goodman in front of the Bellagio Fountains. It was quite the scene as crowds and press gathered along Las Vegas Boulevard to see stars of the film receive this honor. Later that evening an invitation-only screening of the film with an introduction by the cast took place, followed by a post red-carpet reception at Haze Nightclub at Aria Resort & Casino, one of the featured locations in the film. The following two days were packed full of interviews as media outlets interviewed talent, the writer and the director of the film.

Olson Communications also hosted several advanced screenings of the film in both Phoenix and Las Vegas to generate local buzz and share reactions with CBS Films. Though the cast of legendary actors have a built-in audience awareness, Olson was tasked with broadening that demographic to appeal to a slightly younger audience. This was accomplished by selecting a number of community groups and businesses that cater to the target demographic to attend screenings one month before it was set to open in theaters. As the opening neared, a cross section of media partners including TV, print, radio and online were engaged as well to help promote the film.

FROZEN
Walt Disney Animation Studios

The Walt Disney Animation Studios has set the bar high when it comes to top-grossing animated films, especially with those released over Thanksgiving weekend. Previous record breakers included Wreck It Ralph in 2012 and Tangled in 2011. In 2013, Frozen was anticipated to follow suit and succeeded in shattering previous studio and box office records as it earned more than $93 million over the five day holiday period.

As a field agency for Walt Disney Animation Studios, Olson Communications was tasked with creating local buzz beyond the history of fairy tales and love stories for which the brand is best known. To expand the reach of Frozen among local audiences, Olson created a strategic promotions program to create interest amongst the entire family, highlighting the film's adventure, humor for parents and, of course, princesses.

The studio staged an aggressive screening program for the film in cities across the country including seven in Phoenix, hoping word of mouth would spread. The success was overwhelming as the film jumped from the #2 spot to #1, earning and additional $31.5 million in the second week of release.

To complement the screenings, Olson coordinated plenty of ice-filled fun. Various local events were created to generate additional media opportunities and audience awareness. We hosted The Frozen Family Ice Fest at a local mall to welcome families to participate in wintery activities in the desert including a live ice sculpting of Olaf, the film's loveable snowman.

The Frozen Fun Truck also made a stop in Phoenix on opening day as part of a multi-city tour. Olson coordinated several broadcast media appearances for The Fun Truck before it opened to the public at the UltraStar Cinemas in Scottsdale. Guests enjoyed samples of Ore-Ida potatoes, took part in arts and crafts activities and had an opportunity to take their photo with an Olaf standee.

Other efforts included TV, print, radio, online and social media campaigns which also added to the awareness and the success of the film.

KIMPTON'S HOTEL PALOMAR PHOENIX AT CITYSCAPE
Phoenix, Arizona

Kimpton's Hotel Palomar Phoenix, the first of the Palomar collection to open in Arizona, launched in June 2012 in the heart of vibrant downtown Phoenix at CityScape, a dynamic new mixed-use development featuring shopping, entertainment and dining.

In addition to coordinating and executing a series of events to draw awareness to the hotel's grand opening, Olson Communications was tasked with generating publicity about the launch across consumer and trade media locally and nationally.

To generate excitement, build a cohesive message and educate potential guests and media, Olson employed Palomar's theme "Art in Motion" in all facets of the event promotion and execution. The theme took shape in a graphic context with a contemporary e-vite and online RSVP site and literally came to life as contemporary musicians and dancers performed at the dedication ceremony and opening day VIP receptions. The events were attended by key city officials, business leaders, tourism and hospitality industry representatives, project partners and media.

Media efforts included national distribution of a series of releases in the lead-up to opening, sneak-peek media tours of the site and advance interviews with key project partners. On event day, each of the city's television news stations covered the grand opening. Media were hosted to an exclusive breakfast with Kimpton President and COO Niki Leondakis and private preview tours of the hotel. On the social media front, Olson's efforts to build the hotel's platforms generated an overwhelming positive response including a Facebook viral reach of more than 38,000 people on opening day.

Held September 15, the event revealed that Cambria Suites Phoenix-Desert Ridge will be home to the brand's national training kitchen and provided a first look at newly crafted banquet and events menus, both overseen by acclaimed celebrity Chef Michael DeMaria. North Scottsdale's Silverleaf launched as the progressive creation of five distinct upscale neighborhoods and soon became one of the most sought after addresses in America by mixing thoughtful planning and design with outstanding amenities against the striking backdrop of the McDowell Mountains.

Olson Communications joined Silverleaf's opening team to generate awareness of the community and increase sales leads through exclusive, targeted events for potential buyers that featured nationally lauded authors, journalists and political advisors. Although media coverage was not a primary initiative at the outset, it grew in importance during rough economic times and Olson was able to secure premier placements in key publications. Olson's efforts on behalf of Silverleaf evolved as the development grew and, in 2012, the Olson PR team assisted with Silverleaf's celebration of 10 years of sales success.

MARABOU
Steamboat Springs, Colorado

When it prepared to launch in 2006, the private 1,700-acre community of Marabou set for itself the lofty and unique goal of providing a one-of-a-kind, luxurious ranching lifestyle that not only conserved the land and resources on which it was built, but contributed to their long-term preservation.

Olson Communications stepped in to create and execute a media outreach program that was fully aligned to the aspirations of the community while at the same time targeting an affluent, outdoor-minded audience of potential buyers. We created compelling messages to attract the attention of prospective homeowners who might not have considered Steamboat Springs or a sustainability- focused community as the ideal location for a second home. We brought the Marabou story to life for regional and national media through personal visits to the community while leveraging the existing awareness of the area through local media coverage. Olson also assisted Marabou in developing a community relations program in including alliances with key conservation, trade and community groups.

DON'T TRASH ARIZONA
The Maricopa Association of Governments

Phoenix, Arizona

The Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), in conjunction with the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), established a litter prevention and education program with the goal of reducing litter on freeways by increasing public awareness and changing behavior. This program is known as Don't Trash Arizona. Through research, MAG learned that litterers were predominately single males, aged 18 to 24, with a secondary tier of litterers aged 25 to 34. Results revealed that, in general, litters tend to be smokers, eat/buy fast food two times per week or more, frequent bars and nightclubs, and drive pickup trucks.

Armed with this information, the communication team created a three-stage process to achieve results: 1) increase awareness; 2) change attitudes; and 3) change behavior.

Olson Communications, Inc.'s role in the program was to increase awareness to ultimately change behavior. Olson and subcontractors, WHYFOR and Three Flaggs Media, refreshed the branding of the 5-year-old program, introducing a strong, yet simplified, logo and message would resonate with the target audience and encourage positive behavior changes, while heightening awareness about the types of litter that research found was prevalent in the region: "No Cups, Cans or Butts...Don't Trash Arizona."

The campaign message was distributed through outlets that already influenced the target audience, including male-oriented radio stations, gas stations, convenience stores, major events, an athlete spokesperson, social media, movie theaters and online advertisements. In addition to leveraging the new campaign launch for media outreach, Olson created other story ideas based on local occurrence, recent trend or event, and timing of community activities.

Among the large-scale feathers in her event cap are grand openings for Scottsdale Quarter, Kierland Commons, The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa and Phoenix Coyotes/Jobing.com Arena, as well as the media management of the Merrill Lynch Skins Game, The Tradition and ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

With Michelle's leadership, the Olson Communications team remains at the forefront of changing media and interactive platforms, integrating social media and other online initiatives in all PR campaigns and programs. She is an active user of LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook, and lesser-known social networks that keep her connected to her contacts, friends and hobbies.

LINDA OBELE
Account Manager
@lindaobele
Linda has spent the past 25 years working on both sides of the Valley's media desk. Capitalizing on her strong foundation as a beat reporter, editor and freelance journalist, she has built a successful PR career around her ability to discern what's newsworthy (and what's not) and to strategically tell her clients' stories in fresh and engaging ways.

Linda was luckier than most: she discovered her life's passion in the seventh grade when she landed her first "job" as a cub reporter writing for the school newspaper. She was hooked, and followed her nose for news as it led her through Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication and out into the world of daily newspapers.

In 1992, she traded her reporter's notepad for an opportunity to parlay her journalism experience into a career as a public relations professional. Her strong writing skills, natural curiosity and knowledge of what journalists want have come in handy over the years as she continually seeks to bridge the gap between the media and the PR clients she represents. Her results—for clients in the legal, real estate, financial and healthcare industries—include image-building lifestyle and business stories that have appeared everywhere from the Wall Street Journal to online blogs and local community newspapers and broadcast news programs.

In her role as a senior-level executive at several Valley public relations agencies, Linda has managed media relations, crisis communications and community relations for a wide spectrum of clients. Most recently, she has operated an independent public relations consulting business focused primarily on media relations and direct marketing.

ALISON FROST

@alison_f
A seasoned marketing professional in the entertainment industry, Alison has more than 20 years of experience in a wide variety of film, theatre and entertainment promotion. As Olson's manager of film and entertainment, she handles an impressive roster of major studio clients, including Universal Pictures, Focus Features, Sony Pictures Classics, CBS Films and Roadside Attractions.

Alison's past experience also included supervising the on-going marketing, advertising and branding efforts for all AMC Theatres throughout the Valley. She helped orchestrate and promote grand openings for seven new Valley theatres, including the AMC Deer Valley 30, one of just a handful of 30-screen theatres in the country and the only one in Arizona. Her efforts in launching the first all-stadium AMC Arrowhead 14 Theatres earned her a MAXI award from the International Council of Shopping Centers.

Alison brings her love for entertainment and education to people and places beyond the Olson office as well. She's been a board member of the Phoenix Film Festival for several years and previously served as PR director for the Arizona Science Center.

Josh's professional background includes a variety of internships in public relations and journalism. Most recently, he spent the 2013 summer interning with Olson Communications, where his hard work and desire to learn all aspects of public relations landed him a full-time position.

SERVICES

We provide our client partners with the communications tools they need to be successful. We incorporate a variety of services to create effective public relations and content marketing programs to tell their stories and build their business.

OUR CAPABILITIES INCLUDE

+   STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS PLANNING
Whether you're looking to get your organizations word out to consumers, business partners, employees, vendors, shareholders or municipalities, we're here to ensure that message is on-point, timed right and impactful. It all starts with a plan. Strategic communications planning is based first on your company's key business objectives, which are supported by the various communications vehicles such as the news media, social media, public hearings, community events, newsletters and the like, all strategically utilized to spread your word.
+   MEDIA RELATIONS AND PUBLICITY
As our world becomes increasingly digital, we maintain one firm belief: relationships are, and always will be, the foundation of what we do. At Olson, we've become known as a source of reliable information about companies and organizations whose voice should be heard. As a client, you gain access to our targeted network of media professionals who want to hear and share your news.
+   CONTENT MARKETING AND SOCIAL MEDIA
Social media is here to stay, but it's not going to stay the same. At Olson, we embrace the social network and have pioneered a communications strategy that we know works. Through our Discovery Session and creation of each client's Digital Comm Dashboard, we lay out how online visibility can best support your business plan and aid in achieving results you can see.

We strategically establish and manage our client's presence on sites including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Pinterest, Wordpress and others, keeping your brand right in the midst of where consumer conversation takes place.
+   SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION
Olson Communications employs SEO trained experts to analyze the effectiveness and reach of your company's current digital communications, to determine how it can be improved and to then continually monitor search- ability and success.
+   TRADITIONAL AND SOCIAL MEDIA MONITORING
People are talking about your company and we make it our business to know what they're saying. We utilize the latest, most effective traditional and social media monitoring tools to collect both the coverage we secure and the conversations being had, adding value to your brand and keeping you ready to engage with your consumer in real-time.
+   COPYWRITING AND EDITING
Writing is the core of everything we do. The Olson team is well versed in AP Style used by traditional media as well as the strategically optimized language best suited for digital platforms. Having a face-to-face experience with media professionals helps ensure that the story they are telling is truly indicative of your business. At Olson, we personally coordinate and attend all media visits, trips, tours and events helping your business make the most of media opportunities.
+   FILM & ENTERTAINMENT
Effective promotion and publicity is the lifeblood of a successful film. Olson takes the lead role in generating buzz for new releases by turning movies into experiences. By creating and executing advance screenings, publicity tours, special events and targeted promotions, we build interest and word of mouth around a movie that can help transform it from film to phenomenon.
+   WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT
A website is the front door of any business. It's your face to the world and your first tool for promoting your company or cause. Unfortunately, too many sites are created as an afterthought. Our approach to website development begins and ends with a solid communication strategy, then builds upon that foundation with streamlined architecture, engaging design, efficient content and effective SEO. Olson's team of in-house and freelance web specialists create front doors that can open businesses up to a whole new world.
